MegaTen

(reload) (page class:public)
"MegaTen" is the name used to refer collectively to the various games in the "Shin Megami Tensei" / "Megami Tensei" franchise. Considering the vast number of them, "MegaThirty" might be more appropriate! (But that's not where the name comes from, obviously). So far I'm just putting this page up in order to record concisely which of the games are available on which platform. More may be added later. EG, info on which games had official English language versions (most of them were Japanese only), which others had fan-made translations, etc.

IMPORTANT NOTE
No, I do not have copies of these games on my site, only basic information about them. If you want to buy a copy, someone probably has one for sale on eBay or elsewhere, and some of the games may still be available new from some shops. Don't ask me where to get them for free, don't ask me to email you copies of them (most of them I don't even have at all). Get them yourself.

The Series In A Nutshell

Just for those who've never heard of it! This is a bit tricky for me as I've only played a few of them so I can't quite say what things are most common between them (besides the ubiquitous Jack Frost monster), basically assume there's exceptions and if you want more thorough and accurate info, there should be plenty around for you. Basically the games take place in some particular place (generally "the real world") and timeline in which demons happen to either be commonplace or suddenly invading. As you explore the game world you encounter these demons and have the ability to negotiate with (at least some of) them, and sometimes can get them to join your team one way or another. Other ones, you and your team (mostly of other demons), fight with. In most games, if you have more than one demon, you can generally "fuse" some of them together into one more powerful demon.

Because of the overall gameplay concept, it's been called "Pokemon in Hell" by some, although the early games actually predate Pokemon. Most of the games are rather adult (to a small extent that even applies to the handful aimed at kids!), having quite strong violent themes, religious controversy, and in some cases somewhat sexual content. If that sort of thing offends you, you should probably either avoid the series, or at least look into individual titles that you might be otherwise considering getting, to see what you'd be getting into. You have been warned!

Game/Platform Availability

The platform data shown here was collected from this very very long review of the MegaTen Series. It's a good read if you're interested, but it's a lot to take in, hence these tables for at least the platform info, to make it a bit more digestable. Ordering is largely based on that in the review, grouping is my own based partly on that ordering, neither are intended to mean anything much.

I even added the [csv] tag to mwuki in order to write this up (although I had wanted something like that already).

Phew!

Other Megaten sources:MegaTen Wiki, mentions some games I've not listed, has other game info too.
Huge Thai blog page I found with lots of huge pictures of Megaten demons, seem to be the ones from SMT1, and really rather good. I'm not entirely clear if these are fan-made or scans or what; if they're scans that implies there's some strategy guide, or the manual came with an illustration for each monster... and if they're fan-made, wow that's a hell of a job! :D (Ah, on looking more closely, sounds like they're maybe the original concept art by the designers?). Note that the links in the page are sorta broken, I guess the site moved or something.

See also, playing import games, as about half of these were Japanese-only releases, which will cause headaches (apart from the trying to read Japanese issue).
