Hi!
Whatever page of Mwuki (and there were quite a few) you were looking
for, it can't be served right now. Check back in a couple days or so whilst I
investigate further.
- I found this afternoon that MWuki had started throwing HTTP "500" errors
-and indeed so were various other PHP scripts on the site. Initial checks
showed Dreamhost had migrated their servers, and some of the file paths I'd had
to hardcode last time something like this happened (for annoying technical
reasons ultimately to do with PHP being craply designed), no longer worked.
Ok, I fixed those to the new locations. Simple. Problem solved. Right?
- Nnnope, turned out the new paths were to newer versions of PHP than
I'd been using (that older version no longer there), and the new version
gratuitously breaks my stuff, or at least Mwuki, in pretty much the same way
as the last upgrade broke it last time this happened- only now the PHP
devs have seen to it that even the mildly painful workaround I had to employ
the last time doesn't work, because they're a bunch of nobs. The history of
PHP seems to be littered with craptacular design decisions.
- I now have to figure out if the solution they propose in one place is
actually doable, seeing as info in another part of their docs indicates it'd
be completely impossible. If it actually does work, then yay! Problem actually
solved. Or there may be a mediocre solution that works. Ok, whatever.
- Otherwise I'm looking at a major rewrite of Mwuki. Possibly in a completely
different language. Thanks, PHP team!! I wouldn't mind moving to a better
web programming language if there were one as comprehensively web-oriented
yet simultaneously as undemanding as PHP (eg, various Ruby offerings want to
run your entire damn website, likewise the web-programming framework for
Lua, except that isn't even good enough to make up for that flaw). Basically
I want a simple LAMP-stack type arrangement where the P is not PHP or Perl.
Or Python for that matter, yuck. I'm less than optimistic.
But I really need to get to bed, I don't need to deal with this crap
right now. So if you want to see whatever it was, well you can bookmark
the page and
wait; should be back by the 7th or so if things go well.
Till then, there's always the rest
of the site, such as it is, that is not part of Mwuki (and so isn't
broken).
