Quick homemade saline for washing eyes out:
5ml (1 tsp) salt in ~250ml (half a pint, quarter of a litre) of water. Water should ideally be boiling when adding to the salt, to help it dissolve, then obviously ADD COLD duh to make it up to the full amount. If you used so much hot that it's still too hot, let it cool. You do want it to be warmish to, but only like body temperature. If in a rush (maybe an emergency) you could of course just use cold water, or some cold and some hot from the tap, just stir it a bit more.
Can also be used for rinsing out nostrils, but I'm not sure if that's supposed to use a different concentration. That one works reasonably anyway, even if it's not perfect. I've not noticed it burning at least, which is the point of using saline vs water AFAICT.
For smaller amounts (you don't really want to keep it around too long), 2.5ml salt in 125ml water works too. I have 2.5ml (half tsp) measuring spoons, and our measuring jug has a 125ml mark on it, so it's practical enough for me. For syringing nose/sinuses out (as mentioned above) this is a reasonable amount for a pretty thorough job (the little plastic syringe I use for the job is only 5ml, which doesn't quite seem enough, so I do it multiple times).
